Belonging
You may wonder whether or not to become a member of Alki UCC. That is a great question! Why would someone choose to become a member?
A practical reason you might choose is that membership enables you to vote in congregational meetings. During Alki UCC's Annual Meeting of the Congregation, held on a Sunday morning in late June, we vote on the budget and approve the next slate of Council members (our governing board) and officers. We also have occasional meetings where members make important decisions key to church life. Being a member gives you voice AND vote.

Church membership also includes eligibility to serve on our Council, a fantastic way to cultivate relationships and participate deeply in the life of the church.
A more intangible reason to become a member is to align your outward action with your inward intention. Becoming a church member is saying

There is no bar you need to reach. There is no amount of belief you need to have. There is no requirement for membership at Alki UCC other than baptism. And the only requirement for baptism is desiring baptism. You can be baptized at the same service in which you become a member. If you have already been baptized, we recognize your baptism from any church or denomination and at any age.
Schedule a meeting with Pastor Emily (here's a handy online form with her avilabiility) or attend a newcomer gathering to learn more about paths to membership at Alki UCC, including:
● Baptism for those who have never been baptized;
● Confirmation -- saying yes to baptism;
● Re-affirmation of faith for those who have already been Confirmed in a previous church.
● Letter of transfer -- writing your previous congregation and explaining that you have found a new community of faith.
Please note:
- All incoming members use the same “Reception of Reception of New Members' Liturgy.
- As an expression of the United Church of Christ denomination, Covenant is our foundation. Covenant includes both the gifts of membership outlined above and also responsibilities.
- Responsibilities of membership include Time, Talent and Treasure. This may include reading the e-newsletter, attending worship, engaging and being involved in a ministry team and pledging a financial commitment. We do not give guidelines on how much to give, but encourage members to give proportionally — a percentage of their income. Our stewardship season is in the late spring, with a pledge drive that fuels a responsible budget to be approved at the Annual Meeting.
- Alki UCC members are asked to adhere to our Communication Covenant, which was adopted in 2016.
- Please fill out this form to let us know how to keep in touch with you and to opt-in to the church directory.
